Question 1 of 1
1. Question
.You are a first responder to a man found unresponsive, lying supine with a pulse at the scene of an unwitnessed motor vehicle accident. He is an unrestrained driver and was recovered 40 yards from his car. His leg appears broken, and there are no obvious open wounds. You initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
How do you establish an airway?
Correct
The correct answer is D. A jaw thrust is the least traumatic manipulation of the head and neck to establish an airway when no adjunctive measures are readily available. One should be concerned of a cervical spine fracture and minimal manipulation of the neck should be practiced. A head tilt would not be advised since the fact this man was found ejected from his vehicle, unresponsive, and with a fractured leg, it is very likely that he may have a fractured neck as well. Placement of an oropharyngeal airway may be conducted; however, the first attempt to establish an airway should be a jaw thrust. If an airway cannot be obtained with a jaw thrust, one should use an oropharyngeal airway to assist in establishing an airway. A cervical collar should be placed to limit unnecessary manipulation while placing the oropharyngeal airway. A cricothyrotomy should be reserved for casesin which more conservative measures are unsuccessful.
