Nasogastric tube


  • Position the client in a high Fowler’s position with the head tilted forward.
  • This position will assist to close the trachea and open the esophagus.

Irrigations and tube feedings

  • Elevate the head of the bed 30 to 45 degrees (semi-Fowler’s to Fowler’s position) to prevent aspiration.
  • Maintain head elevation for 1 hour after an intermittent feeding.
  • The head of the bed should remain elevated for continuous feedings.
