Checking in on chest tubes:
Caring for a client with a chest tube is a common subject on the NCLEX. Here are some typical nursing actions regarding chest tubes, beginning when the chest tube is in place:
- First, have the client take several deep breaths to fully inflate his lungs and help push pleural air out through the tube.
- Next, palpate his chest around the tube for subcutaneous emphysema and notify the physician of any increase.
- Routinely assess the function of the chest tube. Describe and record the amount of drainage on the intake and output sheet.
